Barbara Byrd Keenan CAE, executive vice president of the Community Associations Institute since 1990, was recently named president of the Institute to better reflect her role as chief executive officer. The change is a result of a review and restructuring of CAI's governance structure earlier this year.
"Keenan has presided over CAI during a period of transformation from an ailing, bankrupt entity to a financially healthy association that enjoys broad member support and wins top honors for educational programs, publications, marketing and legislative affairs," said Stephen R. Bupp, CMCA, AMS, PCAM, 1999 chair of CAI's Board of Trustees.
Prior to joining CAI, Keenan was executive vice president of the International Association of Hospitality Accountants. During her tenure, the association won awards for educational programming, promotion and marketing and publications.
Active in association leadership, Keenan is a member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Committee of 100. She served on the board of directors of the American Society of Association Executives, including two terms on the Executive Committee as vice chairwoman and secretary/treasurer. She was selected as a Charter Fellow of ASAE in recognition of professional accomplishments and leadership and served as chair of the ASAE Fellows Program in 1990. Keenan chaired ASAE's 10th Anniversary Management Conference in 1992 and led ASAE's Associations Advance America Committee in 1994-95. She was the 1996 recipient of ASAE's Key Award, the highest honor bestowed on an association executive.
Keenan served as founding chairwoman of the board of the Travis County Adult Literacy Council and was named TCALC chairwoman emeritus. She was named one of the Top Ten Business Women for 1986 by the American Business Women's Association and is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Women and Who's Who in Finance and Industry. She received the Excellence in Education Award from the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives in 1992 and has served as a committee member, CAE instructor and speaker for GWSAE. She currently serves on the GWSAE board.
The Community Associations Institute is a nonprofit association created in 1973 to educate and represent the nation's 205,000 community associations—condominium associations, homeowner associations and cooperatives. CAI members include homeowners, associations and related professionals and service providers.
