Howard Heads Slate of 2014 CAI Leaders

1/2/2014  -  Falls Church, VA

Community Associations Institute (CAI) begins its 41st year under the leadership of Julie McGhee Howard, a five-year member of the Board of Trustees, past president of the Georgia chapter, chair of the Georgia Legislative Action Committee and member of CAI’s prestigious College of Community Association Lawyers.

An attorney with the Atlanta law firm of Weissman, Nowack, Curry & Wilco PC, Howard is serving a one-year term as president of the 32,500-member international organization. She leads a slate of 23 newly elected, re-elected or reappointed members of CAI’s 2014 Board of Trustees and three Membership Representation Groups.

David I. Caplan, CMCA, AMS, PCAM, chief executive officer of Community Association Management LLC, AAMC, in Pikesville, Md., will serve as the 2014 president-elect.

Howard has been a member of CAI for more than 16 years. She has served on CAI’s Community Association Law Seminar Planning Committee and spoken at several law seminars and numerous chapter events. She spent six years on the Georgia chapter board, serving as president in 2003.

"CAI had a tremendous first 40 years," Howard says. "From best practices and professional education to events and advocacy, CAI has become—and needs to remain—the preeminent organization for homeowner leaders, community managers and other industry professionals."

Adopting the theme CAI Next, Howard sees two overriding objectives in the years to come: engaging all community association stakeholders and inspiring a new generation of CAI leaders. "Many challenges and opportunities await," she says. "There is so much potential, not just for CAI, but also for ourselves, our communities and our professions. We need to connect effectively with our stakeholders, and we need to inspire strong, visionary leaders at the national and local level.

"Our work, individually and collectively, impacts tens of millions of Americans who live in common-interest communities,” Howard adds. “That speaks to the scope and critical nature of our mission."

More than 60 million Americans make their homes in an estimated 325,000 association-governed communities.

"We’re exceptionally fortunate to have so many member volunteers committed to CAI’s success, and Julie is certainly among them," says CAI Chief Executive Officer Thomas M. Skiba, CAE. "Her community association advocacy and chapter leadership speaks volumes about her ability to guide CAI in 2014. Julie's leadership will prove invaluable to CAI, our 32,500 members and the industry."
