Prof. Evan McKenzie, author of Privatopia: Homeowner Associations and the Rise of Residential Private Governments, will be the keynote speaker at the Community Associations Institute's 45th National Conference in Arlington, Va., Oct. 29-31.

McKenzie's presentation, Reinventing Community Association Governance: A Project for the Next Quarter Century, is one of 45 sessions that will explore whether restrictive covenant enforcement has gone too far, what the future holds for community associations and the builder/developer's role in innovation.

About 42 million Americans live in community associations today, and 50 percent of new homes in metropolitan areas are developed in a planned community format. Despite this growth, the general structure of the average community association has changed little in the past 70 years to reflect changing societal needs. CAI's conference sessions will include debate on the latest trends in amending governing documents, building community spirit through innovative governance, establishing neighborhood outreach programs and redefining the role of the professional association manager.
