June 28, 2021 – Falls Church, Va. – Community Associations Institute (CAI), the leading international authority in community association education, governance, and management, expresses our deepest condolences for the victims, their families, and the entire community affected by the partially collapsed Champlain Tower South condominium in Surfside, Fla. We are working closely with the CAI Southeast Florida Chapter to monitor the situation and offer assistance to those impacted by this tragedy.
We understand there are questions about why the building collapsed and how it could have been prevented. We also know that the proper authorities will conduct a thorough investigation. At this time, we believe the focus should be on the victims, their families, and the first responders who continue to search for survivors and provide support to the Surfside community.
President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency for the Surfside condo collapse to help alleviate the pain and suffering caused by this disaster. Specifically, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. The Individuals and Households Program under Section 408 of the Stafford Act and assistance for debris removal and emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance, also will be provided.
CAI believes the purpose of community associations everywhere is to bring people together, strengthen neighborly bonds, promote a sense of belonging, and build a place where we can connect. Our community of homeowners, volunteer leaders, community association managers, and business partners is shocked and devastated by this event.
On behalf of CAI's 42,000 members worldwide and 73 million Americans living in condominiums, housing cooperatives, and homeowners associations, we pray for the families and loved ones of those lost in this tragedy.
