The goal of the two-day event, which is sponsored by the AARP Foundation and starts on Sunday, Sept. 11, is to pack 1.5 million meals for struggling seniors in the national capital region. The meals will be distributed by the Capital Area Food Bank.

By joining thousands of other volunteers in this event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., CAI staffers will help those in need while honoring the sacrifice of those who were lost and those who united in service on 9/11.

"As champions of building better communities, it is vital that we support our own community by participating in volunteer events such as the National Day of Service and Remembrance," says Thomas Skiba, CAE, CAI's chief executive officer. "We are proud to join with people across the country to pay tribute to the victims, survivors, and all those who responded to the attacks, while at the same time making a meaningful difference for local area seniors who face hunger."

The AARP Foundation is the charitable affiliate of AARP, whose vision is a country free of poverty where no older person feels vulnerable. The Capital Area Food Bank serves more than 3,500 seniors every month in Washington D.C., Northern Virginia, and Maryland.
