Washington, D.C., event benefits struggling seniors living in the nation's capital.
Sept. 12, 2017—Falls Church, VA— On Monday, Sept. 11, Community Associations Institute (CAI) employees participated in the AARP Foundation's Summer of Service to SeniorsSM Meal Pack Challenge on the National Mall. The two-day event in Washington, D.C., concluded the Foundation's Summer of Service to SeniorsSM, a four-city tour that kicked off in Memphis, Tenn., on June 3, followed by events in Denver, Colo., and Minneapolis ̶ St. Paul. The traveling tour's goal is to pack 3 million meals for older adults in need.
For the third year, CAI staffers have joined thousands of volunteers to assemble meals as part of the National Day of Service and Remembrance activities taking place in cities nationwide. The meals assembled in the District on Sept. 11 and 12 will be distributed by the Capital Area Food Bank and will directly benefit seniors in need who live in the metropolitan D.C. area.
According to the AARP Foundation, more than 10 million adults 50 and older live below the poverty line.
"Neighbors helping neighbors has long been an objective of community associations," said Thomas M. Skiba, CAE, CAI's chief executive officer. "As advocates of building better communities, it is vital that we support our own community by participating in volunteer events such as AARP Foundation's Meal Pack Challenge, helping to leave a lasting impact on our neighbors in need," Skiba added.
For more than 40 years, Community Associations Institute (CAI) has been the leading international authority in community association education, governance, and management.
The AARP Foundation is the charitable affiliate of AARP, whose vision is a country free of poverty where no older person feels vulnerable. The Capital Area Food Bank serves more than 3,500 seniors every month in Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, and Maryland.
