CAI Publishes Comprehensive Findings on Condo, Co-op, Homeowner Associations

11/4/1998  -  Alexandria, VA

In the first comprehensive analysis of community associations undertaken since 1993, Community Associations Factbook documents stunning growth in the community association population and an evolution in association business, governance and community-building responsibilities. Published by the Community Associations Institute Research Foundation, Community Associations Factbook explores the history, current status and future trends of condominium, cooperative and homeowner associations, which today house 42 million Americans.

Community Associations Factbook finds that well over a million volunteer leaders manage total assessment revenue of $25 billion annually for the nation's 205,000 community associations, and that associations have an estimated $18 billion in reserves set aside for future repair and replacement costs.

In other trends, concern about the power of community association governance structures has led to a search for ways to relax rigid rules and accommodate more flexible rule enforcement. Community associations also are playing a more active role in civil society, organizing charitable activities, participating in public affairs and building community spirit among residents.
