The Community Associations Institute has named David M. Bendoff Esq., Sandra L. Gottlieb Esq. and Charles E. Maxwell Esq. to the College of Community Association Lawyers. The College, established by CAI in 1993, recognizes member attorneys who have distinguished themselves through ethics, character, professionalism, service, and leadership contributing to the evolution or practice of community association law. All three were inducted during CAI's 47th National Conference in Atlanta, Oct. 28-30.
David M. Bendoff Esq., a partner with the firm of Arnstein & Lehr, Chicago, has practiced community association law since 1985. Bendoff was a co-drafter of amendments to the Illinois Condominium Property Act and Illinois Code of Civil Procedure and has testified before the Illinois legislature on condominium legislation. His scholarly writings have appeared in Common Interest, Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, The Chicago Sun-Times, Illinois Non-Profit Chronicle, Real Property Newsletter and Real Property Law Communicator. A frequent lecturer on community association law, Bendoff's teaching credits include sessions for the Chicago Bar Asssociation, the Association of Condominium, Townhouse and Homeowners Associations and CAI. He is a past chair of the Condominium Law Subcommittee of the Chicago Bar Association and served on the association's Real Property Law Executive Council from 1992 to 1996. Bendoff is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and Chicago Bar Association.
Sandra L. Gottlieb Esq. of Swedelson & Gottlieb, Los Angeles, provides general legal and litigation services exclusively to community associations. A prolific author on community association law, Gottlieb is a past editor of CACM's The Law Journal, and her articles have appeared in that publication as well as Echo Journal, Condo Management Magazine and several CAI publications. She has written and presented courses at California Association of Community Managers Law Seminars, the accredited Continuing Education of the Bar on Common Interest Development program and CAI national conferences. Gottlieb is a licensed real estate broker and a member of the American Bar Association, the California State Bar Association, the Century City Bar Association, the Beverly Hills Bar Association and the Los Angeles County Bar Association.
Charles E. Maxwell of the Law Offices of Charles E. Maxwell P.C., Mesa, Ariz., has practiced community association law since 1984. His firm represents more than 400 community associations and also provides services to developers and homeowners. Maxwell has been actively involved in drafting and promoting community association legislation in Arizona. He is the author of numerous briefs filed with Superior Courts in Arizona, the Arizona Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Arizona and has written articles published by the Bar Association for use in association-sponsored seminars. Maxwell frequently presents accredited continuing legal education courses sponsored by the Bar Association and CAI seminars for homeowners, managers and attorneys. He is a member of the State Bar of Arizona, the Maricopa County Bar Association and the Real Property Section of the State Bar of Arizona.
Admittance to the College requires 10 years of legal practice concentrating on community association law; in-depth, scholarly writings (law review quality articles, amicus curiae briefs, legislation, legal treatises); and substantive teachings (accredited law school or non-legal audiences). College members may act as counsel for developers, lenders, community association homeowners or community associations.
The Community Associations Institute is a nonprofit association created in 1973 to educate and represent the nation's 205,000 community associations—condominium associations, homeowner associations and cooperatives. CAI members include homeowners, associations and related professionals and service providers.
