CAI Names National 'Community Association of the Year' Award Winners

9/3/1998  -  Alexandria, VA

Community associations in Illinois, Virginia, Florida and Texas were named the National Community Association of the Year in four size categories by the Community Associations Institute. The 9th annual awards program honors condominium, cooperative and homeowner associations that excel in all aspects of operations and management.

The winners are: Chicago Homes of Dearborn Park, Ill., Small (1-149 units); Porto Vecchio Condominium, Alexandria, Va., Medium (150-499 units); Riverwoods Plantation RV Condominium Inc., Estero, Fla., Large (500-999 units); and First Colony Community Services Association Inc., Sugar Land, Texas, Very Large (1000+ units).

A runner-up was also selected in each size category: Town Oaks Association, Minneapolis, Minn., Small; Villa Cortese, Silver Spring, Md., Medium; Lexington Commons Coach House Condominium Association, Wheeling, Ill., Large; Communities of Concordia Homeowners Association, Cranbury, N.J., Very Large.

"The volunteers who selflessly lead these winning associations demonstrated the highest degree of dedication to fostering community spirit, ensuring sound financial management and overseeing successful governance principles and practices," said Barbara Byrd Keenan, CAE, executive vice president of CAI. "Community associations are complex, unique organizations that embody aspects of a community, a business and a government. Despite these inherent challenges, our winners have proven that community associations are more vibrant, responsive and effective than ever before."

In an extremely competitive field of 158 entrants, winners were judged on organized and productive business operations; thorough and effective communications systems and techniques; fair and effective rules notification and enforcement policies and procedures; and special programs designed to enhance resident's enjoyment of their homes. Winners will be honored at CAI's 45th National Conference in Arlington, Va., Oct. 29-31 and will receive a large display banner to hang in their communities.

The Community Associations Institute is a nonprofit association created in 1973 to educate and represent the nation's 205,000 community associations—condominium associations, homeowner associations and cooperatives. CAI members include homeowners, associations and related professionals and service providers.
