Community Associations Institute (CAI) and the College of Community Association Lawyers Announce 2021 Officers and Legal Fellow Inductees
Dec. 11, 2020 — Falls Church, VA — David Kaman, founder of Kaman and Cusimano, has been elected 2021 president of CAI's prestigious College of Community Associations Lawyers (CCAL). Kaman's one-year term will begin on Jan. 1. He has been practicing community association law for 40 years and was the first CCAL Fellow in Ohio.
Kaman is a passionate advocate for community associations, devoting his entire legal practice to the area of community association law. In addition to his practice, Kaman has held numerous volunteer leadership positions with CAI, including chapter boards and legislative action committees in Ohio as well as the CCAL Governing Principles Task Force.
Laurie Poole, a managing partner of Adams Stirling in San Diego, will serve as CCAL's 2021 president-elect.
Poole specializes in common interest development law, representing master-planned communities, large condominium projects, mixed-use communities, and high-rise developments. The majority of her practice involves interpreting and amending governing documents, advising boards on compliance matters, addressing governance and insurance issues, and enforcement of governing documents. She is a past president and current member of the CAI San Diego Chapter. Poole is a frequent speaker at industry events and has published numerous articles on common interest development law.
Kevin Hirzel, a managing member at Hirzel Law in Farmington, Mich., was elected to the 2021 CCAL board, while the following members were reelected to the board:
- Brendan Bunn, Chadwick, Washington, Moriarty, Elmore & Bunn, Fairfax, Va.
- David Graf, MoellerGraf, Englewood, Colo.
The 2021 CCAL board also includes Edmund A. Allcock of Marcus, Errico, Emmer & Brooks in Braintree, Mass., and Daniel Miske of Husch Blackwell in Milwaukee.
Established in 1993 by CAI's Board of Trustees, CCAL provides a forum for experienced legal professionals working with community associations. Its goals include promoting high standards of professional and ethical responsibility, improving and advancing community association law and practice, and facilitating the development of educational materials and programming pertaining to legal issues.
CCAL fellows are lawyers who have demonstrated skill, experience, and high standards of professional and ethical conduct and are dedicated to excellence in the specialized practice of community association law. They are involved in state and federal legislative activities and prepare amicus curiae (friend-of-the-court) briefs on critical judicial cases that affect common interest communities.
CCAL provides advanced professional educational programs to its fellows and identifies and contributes to the solution of community association legal challenges. It is a collegial forum for the exchange and development of ideas by some of the most knowledgeable attorneys in community association law.
CCAL currently consists of 157 attorneys, including seven members to be inducted during CAI's Community Association Law Seminar, to be held virtually Jan. 25–29. The new inductees are:
