Abbott, Other CAI Leaders Take Office Jan. 1

12/20/2012  -  Falls Church, VA

Dennis C. Abbott, CMCA, AMS, PCAM, president and chief executive officer of Abbott Enterprises Inc., AAMC, an association management company in Charlotte, N.C., will begin his one-year term January 1 as president of Community Associations Institute (CAI).

Julie McGhee Howard, an attorney with Weissman, Nowack, Curry & Wilco PC, in Atlanta, will serve as 2013 president-elect.

Abbott has worked in the community association field for almost a quarter century, founding Abbott Enterprises in 1989. The company is one of fewer than 230 community management firms to have earned CAI’s Accredited Association Management Company (AAMC) designation.

Among many CAI leadership positions, Abbott has served as chair of CAI’s Association of Professional Community Managers Board and as president of CAI’s North Carolina chapter. A member of CAI’s professional education faculty, Abbott has also served as vice chair of the National Board of Certification for Community Association Managers and as vice chair of the CAI Designation Ethics Committee. He is a member of CAI’s prestigious President’s Club.

"It’s a special honor and opportunity to serve as CAI president during CAI’s 40th anniversary year and to continue to work with so many talented industry leaders," says Abbott. "Although CAI has been tremendously successful in recent years, we have countless opportunities to support our 32,000-plus members, build professionalism, advocate on behalf of community associations, and increase our visibility and sphere of influence in the United States and around the world."

Abbott says he is especially committed to raising CAI’s profile among those who influence the housing market and common-interest communities. "With 61 chapters, more than 32,000 members and such an important role to play, CAI needs to elevate its presence among all community association stakeholders," Abbot adds. "Our contributions—as individuals and as an organization—are too important to go unnoticed by anyone. We all need to spread the word—to share what we do and why it’s so important."

"We’re truly fortunate to have so many member volunteers committed to CAI’s success, and those who have worked with Dennis know he personifies volunteer leadership in our industry," says CAI Chief Executive Officer Thomas M. Skiba, CAE. “He has been an effective and respected leader in North Carolina and at the national level and brings an invaluable combination of leadership and enthusiasm to CAI."
