GENERAL SESSIONS

Open Roads, Open Minds:
An Exploration of Creative Problem Solving
Steve Uzzell | National Geographic Photographer

Using striking photographs as illustrations of his metaphor about possibility and creativity, Steve inspires us as Community Association Leaders to take advantage of our experience and vision to make any project and adventure. In any project he undertakes, Steve's preparation lays the foundation for magic to happen. In words and images, he endorses Louis Pasteur's belief that "Chance favors the prepared mind," and his talk inspires us to apply this to our own work and problem solving. "After all, our eyes will only ever see what our mind is prepared to comprehend."

Steve Uzzell is one of the top advertising and corporate photographers in the United States. He started in the photography business 40 years ago as the assistant to the editor of National Geographic and a member of their photographic staff. His assignments have taken him to all 50 United States and 30 foreign countries. His work has garnered international acclaim and won numerous awards.

What Makes the Great Ones Great
Don Yaeger | Sports Illustrated

Don has had a front-row seat with some of the greatest winners of our generation. Each is a legend in his or her own right, but their career wasn't built strictly on physical gifts. Remember, Michael Jordan wasn't even the first pick of the draft. Payton Manning went to a small college because bigger schools didn't want to risk a scholarship on him. But each became a champion through strengths and skills that had nothing to do with physical prowess.

Don shares with us the characteristics of these champions – how they think, how they prepare, how they work and how they live – that truly make the great ones great. Then he'll explain how each of us in community association leadership can apply these characteristics to our personal and professional lives.

As an award-winning keynote speaker, business leadership coach, an eight-time New York Times Best-selling author and longtime Associate Editor for Sports Illustrated, Don Yaeger has fashioned a career as one of America's most provocative thought leaders.

State of the Industry Report and Government Affairs Update
Tom Skiba, CAE | CEO, CAI
Dawn Bauman, CAE | Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, CAI

Informed by community association volunteer leaders, professional managers, community management firms and companies that provide products and services to associations, CAI has a comprehensive picture of the industry. Tom Skiba joined CAI in 2002 after serving 17 years as a senior manager with KPMG Consulting Inc. During his tenure as chief executive officer, CAI has grown tremendously in terms of membership, influence and international reach. Skiba has spoken at dozens of international, national and CAI chapter events, providing insights into the community association industry and the public policies and other forces that influence its growth, reputation and future. He brings his experience and strategic expertise to the opportunities and challenges that face community associations and the professionals who support them.

You Already Know How to Be Great
Alan Fine | CEO, InsideOut Development

When Alan began his career he believed—as most people do—that the best way to improve performance is to increase knowledge. There's some bit of knowledge "out there" you don't have, and if you can just figure out how to get it, your performance will improve. The problem is, if knowledge were all it took we'd all read the book and be incredible managers, teachers, parents, and performers. But obviously we're not. The biggest obstacle in performance isn't about knowing what to do; it's doing what you know.

A different way to look at performance improvement is "inside-out." This approach is less about adding new knowledge and more about eliminating the interference that's getting in the way of experimenting with and using the knowledge we already have.

Alan works with business leaders to increase performance and improve business results. His approach has helped thousands of managers to become more effective coaches, CEOs to become more effective decision makers, and frontline employees to become more engaged and more effective contributors.

Alan Fine, co-creator of the widely recognized GROW® Model, is considered a pioneer of the modern
coaching movement, and many of the world's most respected organizations have adopted his inside-out approach to performance improvement, including IBM, NASA, Honeywell, Gap, and Coca-Cola.

Alan has dedicated the past 25 years to helping people from all walks of life elevate their performance and unlock their potential, including athletes such as Davis Cup tennis star Buster Mottram, record-breaking triathlete James Lawrence, and PGA golfers Phillip Price, David Feherty, Colin Montgomerie, and Stephen Ames.

With his unique and entertaining style, he'll demonstrate proven techniques for using your sense of humor as a tool to control negative emotions and overcome obstacles to success, happiness and inner peace.

Steve is the author of Get Your SHIFT Together: How to Think, Laugh and Enjoy Your Way to Success in Business and in Life. Most importantly, he’ll tell you what steps to take to reduce the chance that your money may be stolen.
